Is it realistic to expect to get in and out of Boston on July 4th to see the fireworks?

We'll be visiting family near Hartford, CT and would like to see the fireworks in Boston. Is it a pointless endeavor to try to get in to Boston the same day to see them, and then get out the same night? Are there shuttles in and out of town or a train, or any other mode of realistic transportation?
