Can someone help with a new horse question?

i just got a new horse and he's really laid back. when i went to go look at him he was wanting a treat and was a little pushy but otherwise super laid back. he is 5 years old and not broke. after i got him home he became spooky at everything and keeps turning his back to me. he would come when i called and follow me but just liked to turn his . i have been raised as this is a sign of disrespect. i took him out for one training session and used a lunge whip as an extension of my arm (wave in air but never even touch him with it). much like the idea of the carrot stick with pat parelli. to get his rear in when he showed it to me. this worked but now he will not come to me. he does move out of my way and will let me catch him still but he doesn't come over and just stand there with me. is this him respecting my space or is he still acting out? i have never had a horse that acted this way before.
